I have had this coin since I was about 6 years old, I believe it might be Indian or Middle Eastern, made from brass? and made about 100 years ago, but I really have no idea, and was hoping someone out there will help me identify its origins. Thanks :)

The date looks like Arabic numerals to me but I suspect Indian may look similar. Not much help so far.

Thanks everyone for your welcomes and quick replies! I also found the google image too.

There's a neat personal story behind this coin too, it was given to me by a family friend when I was young, I took it to school for show and tell and afterwards it fell out of my pocket when I was playing a game at lunchtime.

Several years later, on my last day of primary school I thought, I'll have another look for that coin before I leave for good, I searched in a garden bed where I had searched for it many times before and there it was partly buried, It has remained with me since.

Would love to know its origins, it's one of my favourite coins for sure!

Cheers!

Alas, designguy, I'm afraid your personal story on how you acquired it is far more interesting than the item itself.

This is not a coin; it's a religious medal. Western numismatists call them "Indian temple tokens"; this is a Muslim example. As I understand it, they are typically given to pilgrims departing on the Hajj to Mecca.

You can find many similar items posted here on the forum before; this thread for example. These pages on zeno.ru show various types of Islamic "temple tokens", including several with the same "mosque" design yours has - which is apparently supposed to be a depiction of the Mosque of the Prophet in Medina.

On the other side, inside the square is the Islamic Kalima, or statement of faith, surrounded by the names of the first four caliphs of the Caliphate. This design is copied off mediaeval Indian silver coins and most Islamic temple tokens feature it.

Sap thank you so much for your information regarding this token... Now at least a 30 year mystery has been solved for me. Do you think it would be about 50 years old, at a guess?

With Thanks from Melbourne :)

It's impossible to tell the age of these tokens; the designs have been re-used again and again over the decades, and they're still being made in India today. Some of the older ones are made of silver; more modern ones are base-metal.
