I grabbed a nice 2006 ASE proof Eagle with box and COA for just short of 65 bucks on ebay, which was the best price you can find on a buy it now. I got about 70 ebay skins coming my way on the 3rd, so I grabbed it on buy it now instead of bidding in at 25 an starting a bidding frenzy.... I know you hard core junk silver lovers probably cringe at the thought of PAYING DOUBLE SPOT, as most of you are as sh-rude as a desert trader as Ralphie says in reference to his ol man on Christmas story lol. When he threatens to go buy a white fake tree in front of the tree dealer, and the salesmen says...."I will knock off TWO DOLLARS, and throw in some rope and tie it to the top of your car!", and his Ralphie's dad replied...."You got a deal!" Even provident metals have them listed up around 69 bucks each, plus shipping. The premium, and sought after factor keeps them high. All you Eagle lovers would probably turn cartwheels if you had an entire set of 1986-2012 proof eagles, as I know I would be lovin it.... Oh well, I have always wanted one, and I still got about five ebay bucks left over, so just a major bonus to my collection, which is at 72 oz. now.... Hope all has a safe and Merry Christmas as well as a new year, just another year closer to death as far as I am concerned , lol.... If you grabbed yourself any Christmas silver, lets hear about it, or see some pictures..... Edited by Silverhawk74 12/24/2011 03:58 am

Quote: I know you hard core junk silver lovers probably cringe at the thought of PAYING DOUBLE SPOT... Nope, not a bit of it Hawk. Two things: first, and most important, it's YOUR money, so you need to decide how best to spend it; second, there are a lot of things we can buy in the PM realm that cannot be had for the spot price. If this coin gives you joy and has some potential to appreciate, then I am happy for you!

Jenger if I buy one at 65 today, and many other proof lovers decide to buy it when I put it up for sale when silver gets around fifty an ounce, well then buy that time, these proof eagles will command well over a 100 each....
In the end is it really the silver content that is important, or the amount of money many are willing to pay for it that I look at. Well, to me at least it seems like there are many out there, who like the quality of silver eagle proofs. MY local silver shop prices them at 75 bucks each plus tax, even with silver around 29 an oz. His burnished box COA eagles go for just over fifty, and the simple non key date eagles just inside a plastic sleeve still go for 38 each....
Well, you can line all three of the fore mentioned right beside each other, and look closely with your naked eye and see the difference in quality from the simple circulated eagle, up next to the burnished versions, and then finally the mirror like proofs....
In the end like Ed said, to each their own and if it makes you happy, why not eh....

Just after the UPS guy handed me my box of 25th Anniversary ASE Sets, my significant other said, "You realize you just paid $1500 for 25 ounces of silver. That's $60 an ounce." I told her, "Yeah, I know." Quote: Eagle lovers would probably turn cartwheels if you had an entire set of 1986-2012 proof eagles My grandfather gave his grandkids a Proof Silver Eagle every Christmas from 1986 to 2008. He passed on in 2009 (ironically, the year in which no Proof ASE was issued). I've continued Grandpa's tradition by giving Proof ASE's to my siblings on Christmas 2010 and today. My three younger siblings will each have complete 1986-2011 ASE Proof Sets when they get their presents a few hours from now. They're not " ASE collectors" like I am, but they have kept "Grandpa's coins." (Grandpa always told us silver was going to "skyrocket" someday!)

I did my very last second Christmas shopping last night for my wife. I bought a nice silver chain and cross for her. The jeweler also does some coins and I looked at the proofs, they were priced at $58.
I like proofs but not enough not buy any, the ones I do have come each year from the mint.
In any event I thought they would be a decent buy at $58 plus there is no tax where I live. Proofs are great to look at nothing looks any better.

Yes DNA, had to chuckle at your wife's fast math to figure up that average per coin, lol.....
I love to hear about family history like that, and great to see your are continuing your grand fathers tradition, keeps their memory alive IMO, and teaches the young ones about something that is good to know, even if they are too young too really appreciate it now......

Quote: had to chuckle at your wife's fast math to figure up that average per coin, lol Girlfriend, actually. She calculated the amount in advance, just so she could give me a bad time when the UPS man showed up! You think that's bad? We were at Starbucks a while back, and she spotted ten JFK's in the barista's till. A $5 note bought her seven clads, a 1964-D and two 40%'ers.
