Been trying to complete my MS-63 and above Franklin half set for almost a year now and am down 9 more coins. I have Mostly 48-61 (all MM's) left to go. Is anybody else trying to complete a similar set? If so, and you buy your coins on ebay, have you noticed the competition and the prices for these years getting tougher and tougher? I can't win one of these on ebay to save my life.

WOW it seems that we have identical collection interests here. I am trying to do a 64+ set, and am only a few away, I occasionally get distracted and sidetrack myself into buying a few other coins, but I'm getting there. ebay has been insane in the Franklin category. I used to win nearly every auction, and now I can hardly win one! I know whatcha mean!

Hi mad. Good then, its not just me. Yeh, it is getting tough, am beginning to worry that I might not complete that set the way things are going. If nothing else it is going to cost me more than I thought it would when I first started it.

I win a small fraction of the auctions I won last summer and early fall. I wonder if it's because I've tightened my bidding rules or if things have gotten more competitive. I recon' it's some of both.
I completed my Franklin set 15Oct06. It's about 2/3 VF/EF and 1/3 AU-BU. I suppose I enjoy both shiny new coins and coins that have seen some action. But I figure there is no point in cultivating a champagne and caviar taste if I can only imbibe once a year.
Short story: Just prior to finishing my own Franklin set, I attended a coin club meeting. A gentleman brought in a Dansco Franklin album that he said he'd just completed. It was all Gem BU. But he'd added a page to the album containing all the proofs too.
It was beautiful to look at and sure, I'd like to own it. But it was dispiriting in a way too. One day maybe I'll collect like that. Not today, though.

Collect what makes YOU happy. I have gold and silver sets, Morgans and Proofs. BUT, I also have a penny and nickle collection that me and my dad collected when I was a kid that I would never sell for ANY amount. Neither one has any really valuable stuff, but it is priceless to me. I can still today open the jefferson one up, and remember the day my dad brought me that last coin, the 1950-D to complete my set. I think he paid $ 3.50 for it back then.... MM

I, too, have noticed the same thing. Unfortunately I've just began to look at completing a set of Franklins, so I actually only have a few so far. But, I can't for the life of me, win any auctions on ebay. I've bid on collections of few to a lot of Franklins and no luck. I think my initial thought of a AU/BU set is going to take a lot longer than I expected. I'll still bid, but I refuse to over-bid just to get the coins.

For some reason almost all coins on ebay have taken off. I'm having a hard time winning anything in any coin type and my selling has taken off also. I;m not sure whats going on there.Maybe just the fact that collectors slowed down before and durning the holidays and their making up for it now.

I'm not sure. I've seen very common years, 1951 for example, all mintmarks, going for upwards of $40-$60 lately and those are the non-slabbed. The slabbed ones are going for more than that. It could just be a craze. Some investment guru saw in some coin magazine or saw online that this was the next big thing and he told somebody and then they told somebody. When I first started on this set a little less than a year ago I was getting decent MS-63 examples for under $10 less the shipping but still a good deal. Now, even those years in MS-63 and above are bringing in $20 on ebay. That seems like the average now. Of course the key is still 1949-S which is easily bringing in a little over $100 in MS-63 and more in other stated grades above that. Remember, these are non-slabbed. The price on slabbed '49-s' is going nuts.

I have been told by quite a few people that a Franklin set is the thing to get. They just keep going up and up in price.
But if I were to collect just some popular dates, I would go for the 1955 Bugs Bunny coin. From what I've seen, they keep going up in price, also. Good things, Ty

A few years ago a dealer I deal with told me Franklin's were going to start moving up. One theory holds that this trend occurs when one generation of collectors yearns to collect coins they remember from their youth that are no longer common in circulation. My Daughter and I completed a vey cool Franklin set about 2 years ago, all MS64's and higher with all the proofs in PF64 to PF68. We paid very little for most of these compared to what's going on now. Keep shopping though because the deals are still out there. I still watch the market and occasionally buy if I can pick up a deal on an upgrade. The early proof coins are out of control price wise. Mike P.S, We're working on completing a Shield nickel Set now. The keys in that set(not counting the insane prices for proofs)are getting out of reach as well....

Mike. Congratulations on completing the set. MS-64 and above? That has to be a nice looking set. I am looking forward to completing it. I want to get working on finishing my Liberty V-Nickel set after that. You mentioned the Shield nickels too, seems that and the V's in Fine condition on up rising in price over there also.
