the most altered or counterfeited coin - I was told anyway. there are certain points to look for when determining if it is real or not. can anyone share with us what those points are so so no one who reads this will fall into that trap.

Mint mark-- Very square and boxlike S
mint mark contains a notch in the upper serif
raised dot or lump in the upper loop

VDB-- The D and B have a distinct shape
D----- the lower portion of the loop of D slopes at an angle
B----- The center bar of the B also slopes at an angle

Four die pairs were used to strike the 1909-S VDB
the mint mark appears in four slightly different positions
Knowing these positions will help in determining and identifying several alterations.

Odd die variations--

short raised die gouge protruding from the rim above RU of trust

a die chip in the B of Liberty

raised Die gouges extending into the fild from the left wheat sheaf.

These die markers may or may not be present on all of the 09-SVDB coins, but to find anyone of them on a coin helps in determining the authentisity of the coin .

This is one coin which should be bought authenticated and slabbed by a top TPG.

This info is available in the PCGS Grading and Counterfeit Detection guide,, the pictures area great help in committing these characteristics to memory .

There are many different forms of the counterfeit 09-S VDB far to many to list and describe ,,that is why it is better to learn the attributes of an authentic coin rather than try and remember all the ways that it has been counterfeited.

all raw coins should be suspect ,, this applies to all the coins that are not in a top TPG slab as well.
