It mentions the rim will only show thinning if the rim is formed at the planchet stage. Is the rim of the 1c coin formed at planchet stage or as part of the striking?

Isn't the rim made by the collar ("third die")?

I think rather than call it "thinning", it should be called "metal flow". With the missing area, striking pressure will cause the metal to flow into the hole, just as it flows into the recesses of the die.
