I have one key date Morgan that I would like authenticated and graded. After looking at several grading companies web sites, PCI is the most reasonably priced. Anyone have any experience with them? Thanks for any info.

PCI no longer exists. They went out of buisiness in late 2008. The equipments supplies etc were sold in 2009 and the new owner created DGS. DGS went out of business in Aug of 2010. The equipment and supplies were sold again and the new owner resurrected PCI for about a month and it then went out of business again. As far as I know it has not reopened.

Third party grading is a tough business, it seems..lol
I would stick to one of the top three...PCGS, NGC, and ANACS. ICG seems to be a pretty decent up and comer also.
Just a thought.

Hi Conder101. Now I am a little confused about PCI. Check out the website http://www.pcicoin.com. The site says things about being new and under new management. Let me know what you think of it.

Based on their past, I'd steer clear of them. Stay with ANACS, NGC, PCGS.
At the bottom of their "new" site, it says:

Quote:
Try the new PCI.. .you'll be glad you did!

Instead I'd suggest the following:

Stay away from the new PCI....you'll be glad you did a year from now when they go out of business again.

After PCI went out of business in September of 2010 the owner was once again looking to find a new buyer. Maybe they found one, but it kind of looks like the new PCI was stillborn. New website with a September 12th 2011 date that states they will be moving to a new office in Florida in October. In a few days it will be January 2013 but the contact address on the website is still a New York address. Sounds like the "new office" didn't happen and there has been no update on the website about why it didn't happen. They also say a new holder design is in the works. Four months and nothing new about it either? I suspect the "new" PCI is still defunct. I also note that several of the pages on the site have copyright dates of 2007. That was a year before they went out of business the first time and at least three owners ago.

Tried calling their tollfree number. You get a generic recorded "please press your parties extension" message and then it hangs up without allowing you to press anything.

There's no point sending your coin in to get it graded/ authenticated - if the party doing so has no respect in the business and whose opinion on your coin will have no bearing in the marketplace.

PCI is best remembered for being the grader of choice for the late night coin show circuit. Even when they were at the top of their game they were way loose with their grades. I have two PCI coins that I plucked from a dealer in the mid 1990s to use as demonstration pieces for how not to grade. They are both CAMEO designated proofs - and neither coin have anything remotely resembling a cameo finish.

One is a 1970-S Quarter in PR-70. PCGS has never given this grade to a 1970-S Quarter. It's possible that there may not be one out there. If I took this PR-70 coin to a modern dealer, do you think I'd get PCGS PR-69 money for it? Or do you think I'd get the going wholesale rate for a 1970 Proof quarter? You know? 25 cents.

I hate to see PCI out of business. They were easy to submit coins to and the grading was up to par with the grading books. I think the only reason that PCGS and NGC are at the top is because they "buy" their way to the top. They are much harder to submit coins to also.

I want to thank everyone for the information. I was deciding to send to PCI before I made this post, now I am glad that I didn't do it. I will use another grading service. Thanks Again!

I'm amused at coins in PCI holders, but wouldn't have sent a raw coin to them. Stick with the top three TPGs.
