a penny went along ways at this time. the american public hated such a large cent to carry around.so. the small cent came to past. now the flying eagle was a bust. why? got me it's a beautiful coin. anyway, Longacre, the designer, came up with an alternative.putting a headdress on on a young girl.it looked like an indian but it wasnt.some say it was his daughter Sara. some say not. but it was deffenitly a caucasian girl with a headdress not an indian.

I like to think that it's Miss Liberty having traded in her Phrygian cap for the headdress.
