Max L Valued Member Canada 258 Posts	Posted 12/30/2011 3:45 pm Actually, the hairline effect is only due to the lighting on the 2X2 plastic. The coin has nothing on it but toning. I'm sure when this coin is taken out of the 2X2 you will see an almost perfect example of a Canadian Key Date 1948 Silver Dollar. Report this Post to the Staff

I wonder why this is so. Perhaps slightly filled lettering on the die? Has this been observed on other examples of this coin? Report this Post to the Staff

Check with other examples of '48 silver dollars on the 'Net, or with othe silver dollars in your collection of a date near the '48. Are there any others who would be able provide an explanation for the weak 'RE'? I have only observed, I don't know the series well enough to provide an explanation. Report this Post to the Staff
