Looks to me like definite hairlines.
Nice coin but it shouldn't grade at any grading company.

Actually, the hairline effect is only due to the lighting on the 2X2 plastic. The coin has nothing on it but toning. I'm back from Calgary so I'll head out to get some gloves and take that picture!

You cannot grade a coin through a plastic 2X2 or any kind of a holder for an accurate grade. I'm sure when this coin is taken out of the 2X2 you will see an almost perfect example of a Canadian Key Date 1948 Silver Dollar.

There, doesn't seem to be scratches... its just the holder, I use the same ones and the coins looked scratched badly...

I'm glad they're not hairlines. Excellent purchase.

Alright everyone, as promised a picture without the 2X2! Personally I believe the only shame on this coin is the small little mark on the kings cheek but still a nice coin .

Lots of hairlines, especially in the right field. Sorry, but it isn't the holder. Yurrupean grading XF, TPG au50, or no/details grade.

Yes, it's still worth it ($200-$350 profit), just not as much as we thought it would be... sorry. Still has exceptional detail though.

In terms of the quality of strike, I notice that 'RE' of 'REX', on the obverse, seems to be under done.
I wonder why this is so. Perhaps slightly filled lettering on the die? Has this been observed on other examples of this coin?

I'm not sure if any other examples are like that but the other letters are too pronounced to be a weak strike right?

I feel that the rest of the lettering is about right. Check with other examples of '48 silver dollars on the 'Net, or with othe silver dollars in your collection of a date near the '48.
Are there any others who would be able provide an explanation for the weak 'RE'? I have only observed, I don't know the series well enough to provide an explanation.
