I have 17 1946 shillings and have just had a better look at them.
I have found 10 Perth Mint ones in them.
These are supposed to be a bit rare but I have more of them than the more common 1946 Melbourne mint coins.
The Perth one is th one with the dot before the date.

I don't find them too hard to find in worn condition like yours. Finding them in nice unc is quite tough though, And I think you meant the Perth coin is the one with the dot before the SHILLING.

Only a 'bit rare', but well worth having, because it was the only silver pre decimal coin that the Perth Mint produced.

There may be an interesting story explaining as to why that is so.

Gee trout ya done well there mate..the Mcbible says 1,316 with the dot and just over 10k of them without. I only have one and he's got a dot so we can account for 11 out of the 1,316 Anyone else have one?

I never knew that Sel, You learn somthing new everyday on this site.
Yes they are worn but they are mine an I like em

I wonder what the story behind it is considering the amount of silver, gold and platinum coins coming out lately.

Out of my incredible collection of 1, yes you heard right folks, 1 shiiling, I can account that it is indeed a 1946 .s shilling

weird :P

however mine is poor condition and looks fairly shiny like it has been cleaned, even though its been boxed for 60 years ;/

I don't know why the Perth Mint didn't make pre-decimal silver.

BUT! I think I have a spectacular guess:

1. Sydney Mint is producing silver coins during the "roaring twenties" - helps Melbourne Mint cope with the load.

2. Sydney Mint shuts in 1927-->

3. No silver coins produced 1928-1930

4. Depression hits in the 1930s and mintages for all coins fall, Melbourne Mint can cope.

5. US Mints produce coins during the war. I can't explain why the P.M doesn't.

OK, perhaps guess wasn't spectacular, but there ya go, maybe a few factors why -
