I was looking on ebay the other day even after I said I was done buying coins and I found this lonely Standing Liberty quarter with 3 minutes left. It was unfortunately harshly cleaned but had an odd look to it. It reminded me of some of my other SLQ's that looked a little of when you looked at all of them in a row. There seemed to be extra metal between Liberty's right leg and the wall (left side of the coin when looking at it head on) This coin also seemed to have a lamination flaw above the shoulder. Withe only 3 mintues left and no time to do any research I threw in a low bid as it would fit in with a future post I was going to make some day about another one of mine that I think has some PMD extra mteal on it.

Anyways, I won the coin and started doing a little more research. It appears that the extra metal is actually due to a die clash. You can see the letters E from E Plurbus and the M from America from the reverse in the obverse dress folds. The "extra metal" is actually from the deten left from the eagles wing and the "lamination" is actually a depressed area left from the eagles tailfeathers. You can also see one of the reverse stars above Liberty's shoulder.

I compared the picture of this coin (since I haven't got it yet) to the others in my collection and most of the other clashes do not show the star or tailfeather. One of my NGC VF30 graded coin makes no mention of the die clash with visible E and M but there is a seller on ebay selling some ANACS gaded G6 examples for $100. I had seen his acutions before but with the poor pictures and no description I never really understood what he was talking about.

This site http://www.maddieclashes.com/TDC-25c-1929S-01.html has some great pictures with the obverse and reverse overlays which finally brought all of this into perspective for me visually.

Here's a few more I found when I got home to take some pictures.

Dateless 1917-1924 with star above shoulder and tailfeathers (maybe another 1920 although the first one I pictured appears to have the reverse or obverse slightly rotated when it clashed compared to the others)

Dateless S Mint 1917-1924 (maybe a 1924-S?)

I got the coin today and here's a better pic. Maybe someday we will be able to date dateless Type II SLQ's due to the die clashes or other quirks like some dateless Buffalo nickels with head feather variations.
