Anyone trying to go towards higher quality and more expensive, but less of them? Hard for me because I have a hard time saving up $1000+...always end up blowing it on the latest 'deal' I find on ebay.

Yeah, I am the same way.. Except, my coin of choice is silver bullion.. So buying more at once will save me money, but like you, I have a hard time setting aside say $1000 and then blow it all on one thing. It is a lot easier to spend $1000, $200 or $300 at a time. I think my next APMEX order will be about $1000 order so I can save some money.. Silver is dropping like crazy right now so I would like to take advantage as soon as I am okay financially with my bills and what not.

My collection is statified in a slightly different way. I only have a small safe, so only the most valuable coins go in it. That's OK, I like to refer to the bulk of my collection that is easier to get at.
There have been times in my life when I have budgeted hard, and have looked hard all the same, for good value for money numismatic purchases, with less than $10 to spend. There have been other times when I have been looking for good value for money, with over $2000 available to spend on a single purchase.
The thrill of the hunt is no less enjoyable with less money in your pocket.
You learn to fully appreciate other folks' collections that may be far less valuable than your own.
I have a love for numismatics, and I can't even buy or sell THAT!

I'm not really sure of my problem, but I like adding to my old collections while still adding to my current, modern one. Yes, I'm collecting the Presidential dollars & the National Park quarters. (They're cheap and my ancestors will appreciate them, maybe 200 years from now!).

I think because of the immense mintage numbers, modern coins in a few hundred years will be regarded like we regard cheap roman coins. Well, maybe.

I've made a conscious decision to stratify my "collection" (the things I keep vs the things I flip) upwards by moving into a series offering a lower price of admission than the Morgans I so love. Mind you, there will still be Morgans, but mostly transitory coins, bought for the purpose of sitting under the lens of my camera.

SuperDave, I really like your approach with photography. viewing my collection is cumbersome at times and a good photo can make multiple viewings much easier and when you sell it you still have the unique image.

Well, that's one of the reasons I do it. But not the main one.

I'm a constant, slowly, upgrader of all my Albums. I start any Album with whatever I can to just fill or almost fill. Then I start an effort to upgrade them all. All coins that come out of an Album by an upgraded coin, goes into an additional Album. This system gets really horrible when I get up to numerous sets. For example now on #12 of Mercury dimes.

I am also trying to consolidate my collection, but I have a hard time permanently compromising parts of my collectio. Like you, I dont have the patience to save up money. But what I can do is sell 10 $300 coins to buy a $3000 coin, and then slowly replace the $300 coins over time for example, as they are easier to buy in smaller bites. Though I love all the idiosynchrosies of the varieties and grades of less expensive coins, and cherrypicking; there is also something to be said for owning a high end coin that few people own and would normally never be attainable by me without some sacrifice.

My aim for 2011 was to add "higher calibre" coins to my collection. In previous years I mainly added low-ball stuff (under $100) and I felt that this year was the year to add the bigger items. I have been pretty happy with how I've done this year, but I'm sick to death of saving huge amounts of money at a time to buy a single coin. So for the first three quarters of 2012 I am going to focus on my 7070, which will hopefully be a good change of pace from 2011.

I agree with Carl... I am an upgrader, but too, I'm content to not just fill holes... I'm ok with having empty holes until the right coin comes along, but it doesn't have to necessarily be a MS coin. A nice coin at a good price, and it's mine!
