I know this is a basic/begginers question that has probably been asked before but I only collect 90% silver at this time. Why do Engelhard Bars command a larger premium than other brands of silver bars? Isn't silver silver or is it the fact that there are less silver bars made by Engelhard? Is it supply and demand?

Buyer confidence and some do collect Englehard for its own sake.

Englehard has been around for a while. Which means that the shape of, size of, and manufacturing method used for their silver bars have gone through some changes. Age + variety (and implied rarity) = added value to some collectors. A sort of pseudo-numismatics.

don't see confidence playing a part though. If anything I'm more wary of Englehards because they are popular enough to have the crooks invest in a great deal of fakes. In comparison, you don't see fake RCM or NTR silver bars floating around

Personally, I never found Engelhard or Johnson Matthey bars to be any better than other silver bars of the same weight that would justify the high premium that a lot of them seem to carry. If I can buy a nice SilverTowne bar for quite a bit less for the same weight of silver, that is what I do. I guess, in large part, silver really is silver to me, although I do like the bars to look nice. Because of this, I do not find the lumpy looking poured bars all that attractive. This is fine, though, because others do. To each their own!
