Hi everyone,

I stumbled upon your site while looking for advice on "disposing" of some currency I've recently been given custody over. My mother-in-law had gave me a drawer full of coins/bills she acquired over the years from friends and relatives who've passed away. I'm trying to figure out how to value these coins (there's a few hundred) but since I'm not really a collector, I was hoping to get your advice on where to take the coins, or how to research it myself. I will obviously consult Charlton's, to weed out the ones that are very common. I do think some of them are worth something, but I realize the vast majority likely won't be worth anything more than face value. I'd like to spend a bit of time to get her the best price, but either way, she'll be happy if she gets anything more than face value for them.

There is a mix of Canadian and American currency and most are quite worn. Here's a short list of some of them:
US Buffalo nickels
CDN 1950 through 198x Silver Dollars
CDN 1898 through 1918 nickels
CDN 1896 through 1918 pennies
CDN 1867 confederation coin
CDN 1954 and 1967 dollar bills
CDN 1954 twenty dollar bill

Here's a couple of example pics.

Here's to make it quick: the bills are probably only worth a couple dollars over face value if worn but take photos anyway and post them.

The Confederation medal is the 60th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation, minted in 1927, worth $10-$15.

The 1917 10 cents looks XF from what I can see on the photos, worth about $12-$15

The pennies, nickels, dimes dollars, anything you need help with post pics here and bigger than the previous. Thanks and welcome to the forum, a friendly place.

Thanks, that's great. Looks like I came to the right place.

As I sort through them, I'll post anything I have problems with.

santafeboy, here's the 20. I've used the image optimizer on this site, so hopefully it's better than my previously posted images. If not, let me know and I'll try to fix it.

if the dollars are silver, then a good start price would be bullion, wich is I believe around $20

I agree 10xloupe. I find them fascinating. I find it most interesting to think about what was going on in history at the time each of the notes/coins was circulating.

Thanks for the input.

coincollect1, do you mean $20 a piece?

I think I read somewhere on this site that prior to a certain year (196x?) the silver dollars were actually silver?

Yes, each, but now it's more $16.62 per coin just in silver, the dollars stopped being silver in 1968 ('68 was not silver) so before 1967 are .800 silver. The value of metal depends on the market value of silver, it goes up and down, now it's down. Here's a good site for coins at melt value (metal content value): http://www.bullionspotprice.com/silver

I guess the obvious question then is, where would I sell the pre-'68 silver dollars to get bullion prices?

Don't sell them at bullion price. Post pics here, we'll value them and you can sell on ebay or another site at a good price over melt.
