I received this coin yesterday and wanted to share it with the community.
I bought this off ebay for $30. I hope I didn't pay too much for this 'widow's mite' lepton. I have been watching different auctions and they range from $5-79.50 for near slugs to very nice mites. I liked the detail on this particular coin. It is 14mm at its longest point and have no way to weigh it just yet.
According to the COA that came with it, it is from Hebrew King Yehonatan (Alexander Jannaeus), minted in 78 BCE. Obverse depicts an anchor with the Greek inscription "of King Alexander." Reverse depicts a star of eight rays surrounded by a diadem (denoting royality).
So, as always, will enjoy your opinions and observations on this particular coin. Thanks.

Nice looking coin; however, I know so very little about these coins. I knew you were in the market for a biblical coin, so I bid on a coin from the First Jewish Revolt yesterday. I did not get it as my bid was very low. It actually went for around $15 as I recall. If you are pleased with the coin and the price, then the price was right (at least that is how I look at it when I buy a coin).

Regards,

Actually, the buyer included 5 other coins with this one. Two Hebrew kings, a Roman, an Islamic and a Byzantine, all pretty bad shape, but he knew I was interested in collecting Biblical's. The five were not part of deal, and when he added them I was wondering if he added them because of the price. But I think he was just a nice seller who wanted add something to the experience. So I was just curious of what you and others thought on the price. But I agree with you JW, I love the coin and it was my first Biblical. So there you go. Thanks for your thoughts JW, always learn something from you.

I think that's a reasonably good buy. It's quite a nice example and as you say the prices for these vary so widely that it's difficult to know when to jump in.

It's a nice coin

Thank you Bcchus2. I went back on the Forvm Ancient Coins sales and looked again at several examples of the same coin, many if not all were actually much higher in that same grade. So, yes I think I did ok and as JW said earlier, 'If you pleased with the coin and price, than the price was right!" Thanks guys.

The obverse might be just a bit better, but the reverse is not. I'm feeling good about my coin. I actually did a best offer with the seller. He wanted 36 bucks and got him down to 30. So I'm right in there. Thanks JW. Also picked up a David Hendin 2010 5th Edition 'Guide to Biblical Coin's' for $30 on ebay. I couldn't find a copy under $85 and as high as $130 for the 4th Edition. Been a good week!

Technically, these two are not the same type but you are the one that owns Hendlin so I'll leave that study up to you. Mites are very varied and available in all degrees of condition and workmanship. For a coin so common they bring high prices but that is what happens when a coin gets mentioned in the Bible. I have very few but could not resist this one that is a bit odd.

Well dougsmit I haven't got the Hendin quite yet so I'm going to plead ignorance until I do :). Your mite is very unique to say the least. I've looked at literally hundreds of examples and have never seen a square one. Very nice.
