I love that Wheat Sheaf Dollar!

You wouldn't have been sunburned waiting outside the Denver Mint yesterday on Jan. 1st, even though it was bright and sunny day.
Mainly because the temperature was -5 Celsius.

Exactly 20 years ago, and about the same time in the morning That I am posting this, I used the 'Mint your own' coining press at the RAM.

Interestingly, this was the very first day of operation of this facility.

You put $2 into the slot, and out comes a freshly minted One Dollar coin.

On this day, the press was producing the Barcelona aluminium bronze Dollar. You took the coin out of the collection cup, and put it into a small glossy colour printed card cover. I put 5 x $2 coins into the slot. I got five coins and five covers.

I had not the slightest idea that those coins would have a very considerably greater market value than they did at the time of minting. I suspect that, at that time, the Mint didn't either! I still have all five of them.

The date at the day of minting: 3rd January 1992. The date of this post: 3rd january 2012.

$2 for a mint-your-own dollar 20 years ago.
I think the ramshead MYO were $10 last year.
What is charge for one this year?

Nice to see the old pre-decimal designs getting a run again.

Well I was at the mint, on the 02/1/12

for some dumb reason I assumed the mint would not be open on New Years, annnnd well I didnt bother checking either.

casually rocked up to a line of 10 people the next day, waited 20 mins, walked it and minted and realised there was no special certificate. then in my head I punched myself a few times, and left with a 2012 MYO dollar as well as severely dissapointed.

I couldn't resist the Silver Proof version.
It will keep my wartime "D" and "S" three-pences and six-pences company.
