I'm not sure if this qualifies as a "Classic Coin" question or not. My apologies as I'm a novice at this stuff.

I found some Kennedy half dollars that my Dad left me. There's 7 of them in all, and they are from 1961, 1963, 1965, 1967 and 1971. I'd like to find out what they're worth.

1)Is there standard value for these? Or does it depend where I take them?
2)Is it better to take them to a place that buys gold/silver or to a place that specializes in coins?

Thank you.

Kennedy halves were not minted until 1964. The '61 & '63 halves must be Franklin halves. The two Franklins are 90% silver. The '65 & '67 Kennedy halves are 40% silver. The '71 is clad.

If you google "silver coin prices" you can get melt value for the silver halves you have. They could go for a premium over that depending on their condition. The '71 would be totally based off of condition, as there is no intrinsic value (other than face) with that coin.

the 65 and 67 are worth $4.37 each in melt value, and the 61 and 63 Franklins are each worth $10.68 melt as of 1/3/2012.Those are only melt values there may or may not be premiums for these coins beyond melt value depending on condition.Hope this helps.

Wow, thanks for the info. I also realized I need new glasses, because I had the dates wrong. I have one from 1964, one from 1966, three from 1967 and one from 1974.

Thanks again for your help.

The mint mark on the coins can also help in determining if they have a value above melt, look at them and see if any of them have a "S" mint mark as those could be proof coins.

I think proofs didn't have the "S" mintmark until 1968 because most were made in Philadelphia, which had no mintmark. For the dates that you mention, they would most likely be only worth the silver value with the exception of the 1974 which has no silver and can be spent.
