Does anyone know if there is a list available that shows when banknotes were issued by serial prefix. The reason I ask is that I sent Scoutjim a $1 note and he asked me what year it was. Late notes have the date as the first two digits, but early notes don't. So I was wondering if you could tell by the prefix. Steve

You can tell by signature.

Yes, they normally do - unless it's a signature combination only used for a very brief time. It ought to be possible to at least guesstimate the year of printing by finding out the first and last serial prefixes for a particular combination. I believe Mick Vort-Ronald's book "Australian Decimal Banknotes" has that sort of information in it. I don't have the book, so I can't be sure.

That $1 note was signed by Johnston and Stone and was issued from 1982 and the last prefix (DPS) 1984.
