Does anyone know if there is a list available that shows when banknotes were issued by serial prefix. The reason I ask is that I sent Scoutjim a $1 note and he asked me what year it was. Late notes have the date as the first two digits, but early notes don't. So I was wondering if you could tell by the prefix.

Steve,
Look at the signatures then check Macca's for the year.

Do signatures run for more than one year though?

Yes, they normally do - unless it's a signature combination only used for a very brief time.

It ought to be possible to at least guesstimate the year of printing by finding out the first and last serial prefixes for a particular combination. I believe Mick Vort-Ronald's book "Australian Decimal Banknotes" has that sort of information in it. I don't have the book, so I can't be sure.

That $1 note was signed by Johnston and Stone and was issued from 1982 and the last prefix (DPS) 1984.
