Hey guys

I was just wondering, does anyone know where I can aquire an Australian Steel Core (preferrably 10c but any would do)? Being a hobby magician performing in Australia, one magnetic coin would be really handy for my tricks. They sell all sorts of AMERICAN Steel Core but that would look just suspiscious when I use it in Australia =P.

Thanks

If the local magic shops can't help you, I'm not sure.

As a last resort, or as a temporary fix until you get something better, you could try a similar-looking foreign coin. I'm thinking Fiji - their coins are the same size as ours, they have the Queen's head on one side like ours, and post-1990 5¢, 10¢, 20¢ and 50¢ coins are made of plated steel. You should find some in just about any coin dealer's scratchtray.

The obverse of a Fiji coin looks like this:

Hope this helps.

Auron - Welcome to the CC Forum!

Sap - Good suggestion, I would never have thought of Fijian coins.

Thanks guys,

Fiji coins - great idea! Steel is magnetic so all I have to do is show the head of the queen. Brilliant! Thanks Sap!

If you have any probs finding a coin from Fiji, send me your addy, I've got a spare Fiji 1996 50¢ you can have. It's even dodecagonal just like ours. I've checked & it's magnetic.

Another suggestion is the 'new' NZ coins. They're steel and their new 50¢ is about the size of the Aussie 10¢.

Lol, I didn't realise there were that many similarities with Fiji coins and Aussie coins. Thanks for your offer but I'll try to get a Fiji coin on my own - I don't want to trouble you =P!

I reckon NZ coins are probably easier for me to get. Probably know one I know goes to Fiji, is a native or even heard about their coins! NZ, yeah, I have a few friends who travel there once in a while and I hopefully could ask them to piggyback a 50c coin =P.

You seem to know your coins nancyc! Thanks for all your help!

Alright, I found under all my junk a few NZ coins. The 1987 NZ 50c coin is about as big as our Australian 50c coin and not magnetic. When you are saying new, are you refering to post 21st century or post 1990?

Thanks

Unfortunately, new Zealand only just got around to changing their currency. The only magnetic NZ coins will be the most recent series, dated 2006, and may not necessarily be easy to find just yet. Here's an old forum thread about them.

Auron, my offer still stands. If you PM me your address, I can send you the spare Fiji 50¢ I have, free. The NZ coins changed last July, so you'd be looking for 2006 or 2007 NZ coins. The only NEW ones which resemble Aussie coins enough to pass as Aussies are the 50¢ (size is a little larger than our 10¢) and 20¢ (size is a little smaller than our 10¢).

Depending on where you are, if there are any coin dealers/shops around, they may be able to get some 2006 or 2007 NZ coins in for you.

The 'old' NZ coins prior to 2006 were pretty much the same composition as Aussie ones, so none of them will suit your needs. I've got heaps of 'old' NZ 5¢,10¢ & 20¢, but none are magnetic.

I've noticed that some Solomon Islands coins are magnetic, & the Q's head is similar to Aussie, but they'd probably be harder to get than NZ or Fiji. I only have one SI 20¢, so naturally I want to hang on to it.

Anyhow, as I said, my offer still stands. The 50¢ can be on it's way to you as soon as you send me your address.
