I don't have my catalog with me, but I think it is a 3 Kreuzer from Austria. Austria, Germany, and some German States also used the eagle on the reverse like the Russians did. It also has a B mintmark. Try searching on NGC's site and type in 1786B 3 and see what pops up.

I think mmorgan22 is close - but that eagle reverse is indicative of Prussia rather than Austria

Agree with Prussia, the obverse legend: Fridericus Borussorum Rex

It's a 3 groscher

I originally thought the mintmark was "B", but it must be "E" (for Konigsberg), there was no such coins with a B mark (or at least that I could find).

svslav, you beat me to it. was about to post:

Nice going gang!

PRUSSIA - 3 GROSCHEN - FRIEDRICH WILCHELM III
Composition: Billon
The mint mark must be an E from what I could find.

This coin will fit nicely in my collection of darkside 18mm silver coins.

Though billon is not "silver" it is about 5-15% silver, which is good enough for me!

Thanks!

Hey, that's not what the coin itself says. the reverse legend claims: MONETA ARGENT. Although, there's a proverb: If you see a plaque on a bull's cage which says "Lion" don't believe your own eyes.

You went a little too far on your Friedrichs.
Friedrich Wilhelm III replaced Friedrich Wilhelm II in 1797. In his turn Friedrich Wilhelm II replaced Friedrich II in 1786, but FW II's coin types were different.
So what you have is the last year of Friedrich II who ruled 1740 - 1786.

Well, that solves the mystery of E looking like B!

Good job DCH, you must REALLY know you 18th century europeans to have picked up on the difference between the E and a B! Impressive!
