the bank I usually go to is charter one and they don't have them, I would bring my Tupperware and get $20 worth of pennies because they only have $10 for each clerk and there is two at a time. but I was curious as I see more people here get the boxes. do certain banks offer this or is it requested?

Yeah, not all banks will have boxes of change on hand. Your best bet is to check with different banks.. If need be, make a bogus bank acct so you are able to get coins from them (most banks require this now). Or get in good with the bank teller or manager and ask them if they would be able to order you boxes.

sometimes they run out of pennies too, and when I do get the chance to get them I get these unwanted looks. I'm hoping to find a new better bank

It's more widely available at the banks that have merchant tellers. Bank of America for example has a great merchant services because most small, medium and large businesses have accounts with them. And that is all I buy, $25 boxes.

ask them if you can order a $25 box of pennies ahead of time.

Just make certain they know you have an account there, and you should have no problem. But sometimes they don't always have extras on hand (they need them for business accounts).

yep, all the BoA branches I've been to have had the $25 boxes of cents. Other than a few questioning looks, it's generally pretty smooth (some tellers get miffed when I ask for a box of nickels, which is much heavier).
Now, it's hit or miss whether they are brand new 2011 rolls or mixed. My success rate there has been about 50-50 and I have 3 boxes of shiny new cents that I need to figure out what to do with.

Celtic, you can sell your new pennies by the box on ebay for a slight premium... I've seen others do it. Seems there are buyers for just about anything on ebay!

I haven't had much luck at all with my local banks. Went to 5 today and most of them looked at me like I was nuts for asking for 2 boxes of pennies.

Try going to a bank where you have an account and ask for one box first.

My branch orders boxes but we often break them down for individual tellers. We only have one client who likes to buy by the box, most buy $10 at a time.

Why do you guys have trouble finding boxes of cents? I go to Wells Fargo and they have lots on hand...they ask me how many boxes do you want?!

The last two unusual requests of a bank I made were for a banded stack of two dollar bills and a banded stack of consecutive serial new $10 bills. I started my request with "Hey I hope you can help me. I'm trying to make a special Xmas/wedding present and.." I wasn't even a customer of the banks I went in, and the cashiers were super helpfull. Both times I had the teller and the supervisor check all tills plus the vault to accommodate me.
Do you guys walk into a bank wearing an overcoat and hat pulled over your eyes and coldly ask for $100 in pennies as you slowly push a C-note across the counter?
Try starting with a smile and "I'm a coin collector that is trying to get my kids into the hobby. Do you have any.." I can't imagine anyone with so cold a heart as to not help you.

I find it helps to go to branches in busy areas of town - these are usually well stocked with multiple boxes of each coin. I usually always swap one box for another, this way I'm not taking the last box of a certain coin denomination in stock.
