Hey all, sorry if this is kind of a dumb question but today I found this Canadian Dollar which is in great shape except its got this coloring on both sides? kind of blueish almost like an oil. I do know some ppl talk about this kind of color effect but I forget what its called and or how to tell if that's what it really is? Or is this some sort of chemical thing.

Does this add to its value or take away. Well the value of any coin I do know that 1968 dollars are not really that sought after ;P

Thanks

And sorry for the pics these where the best shots I could get to show the coloring.

If I had to guess - which is all I can do do, that pure nickel dollar has been heated. Very few things found in the normal walking and talking world affect pure nickel to such an extreme. Even accelerated (artificial) toning only creates a few mild hues.

Sure looks like silver to me...which it shouldn't be. Is it the same size as a regular 68 dollar? Or the size of a 67& earlier dollar? Where did it come from?

thanks ugly, ill look into that more.

Small: this is not silver I checked it (with a magnet carefully of course.) And its the same size as the rest. I found it today from the bank. I went in and asked if anyone had returned and silver dollars as I always do and today they said yes. It was a good set didn't find any silver BUT I did however replace ALMOST all my current dollars to almost uncirculated quality. And even found from 1981-1987 SP coins all in amazing shape. :P was a good day. but this was the only one that had any toning on it.

Too bad. Then I would guess it had been in a fire or subjected to fire, perhaps with some oily or waxy substance.

waxy and oily? That describes every tree ever grown, we call it creosote.

But it's not necessary for that colour, simple heat in an oxygen atmosphere.
