I was told these are worth keeping. I am finding a ton, but I wouldn't really qualify any as Brilliant Uncirculated. If I got enough "nice" 82s and 83s, would these be worth anything or not really, just toss em back?

I think the reason why they told you they would be valuable, is because there were no US Mint sets made those 2 years. Since there were no mint sets, no one really saved them in BU condition, so they are worth a lot more than other coins of that era in BU.

Unless they are BU, they aren't worth holding, which is true of almost all coins from 1971 and on. Only a few error and variety coins from 1971 are worth holding on to that aren't BU.

Along with what wquinn said, there are multiple varieties of the '82. Ran accross this pic recently, had to keep it for a reference

I agree with quinn.... save them in BU, but toss back anything less than BU.

And his reason is exactly right -- no mint sets those years.

Nice attractive '82 and '83 issues can bring good premiums even in XF. AU's can sell for over $25. Nickels are easier to find in these dates so won't have such strong premiums.

Manyof the clads are extremely elusive in XF and better and this especially applies to well struck coins with even wear.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Hi Fioti,

That pic isn't a variety, but some type of die chip, die fill, or something else. It is hard to tell from a pic on what is indented or not. At least with my eyes.
Rest in Peace

That would be 1883 3/2, as in Shield nickel

Okay, I'll try to post some pics of the more "decent" 82/83 to get some opinions on how I'm doing.

Thanks everyone for the help!

This thread is about 1982 and 1983 Jefferson nickels not Liberty nickels.
