Can anyone give me some more pointers on small vs large date?
These are 4 coins I've found in the last week or so... but I'm still having trouble identifying the small date... Does the mint mark location have anything to do with it?

the Loop in the 9 and the location of the 7 is what I always look at.

Sometimes I still have trouble seeing LD Vs SD. so I just take a picture and then I know.

A looping/ more rounded 9 (where the end of the curl seems almost pointy), along with a lighter/"mushier" LIBERTY is what I always look at for judging a small date versus a large date. Once you see a few small dates it becomes alot easier. All 4 above are large dates.

On a SM date, the top of the seven will usually be aligned with the top of the "0". And the strike on "Liberty" will be soft compared to the LG date varieties. As you can see, your LG dates have the tops of the sevens slightly lower than the tops of the zeros.

I figure if you find more than one that looks like each other they have to be large dates...small dates are noticeably different side by side, so keep one of your large dates for comparison sake.

A picture is worth a thousand words:
1970-S-Small-Date?
Note the angle of the center of the 9.
Note the level of the large date bottom edge of the 7 is lower than the 0.
Note the small date ends of the 9 are chizeled and the large date ends are blunt.
Hope this helps. You might want to save this image?
