I wanted a quarter-ounce platinum eagle and they aren't that easy to find. When this one came up on ebay I went for it. The premium over bullion is surprisingly high but I couldn't find a better price. Naturally the spot price dropped after my purchase but I'm happy I own one now.

very nice!

APMEX also carries 1/4oz Pt eagles, so it would be useful to check them to compare prices the next time you decide on a purchase.

Yes, APMEX often has Pt coins in various sizes but are just as often out of stock. This seems to be a problem with PMs when their prices dip. While the price may be really good, the supply is not and it can be difficult to find coins and even bars when this happens. I noticed this about 6 weeks ago when I wanted to buy some Pt coins. All I could find were a few 1/10th oz. coins for sale and a few bars here and there. I was hoping to find some 1/4 or 1/2 oz. coins. The supply seems to be picking up a bit lately, though, so maybe I will be able to get some shortly.

What would you consider a good price over spot on the various Pt eagles?

Depends Oldgold if it were a proof coin or not....

A none proof Liberty 1/10th colored for example right now, my price-o-meter is telling me around 175 dollars is a real decent deal....

Now then, proof variety of the same version Liberty and 1 10th, say 200 is a fantastic deal, and good luck finding that. As it is rare to find a ebay dealer to let them go for 225, even though it does happen from time to time. When money is needed things come up for sale, whether the owner wants to sell or not....

We have talked about this often lately, how the platinum Wall street price of platinum is separating from the reality of what dealers will sell it for. The rarity I figure will always keep it in the spotlight to hard core PM collectors. And of course, the auto industry has every thing to do with its paper value, and I don't see cars we drive today going anywhere anytime soon....

The raw proofs are pricey and the PR70DCAM ones can bring crazy premiums.

I like the reverse design on that one. I hope you got the OGP too, that adds to the premium.

That is quite an issue with Pt coins, particularly with the Maples and Eagles. About the only coin I have seen lately that doesn't have a large premium is the Isle of Man Nobles. Is that a real coin or is that a medallion? Other than that one example, a lot of the 1-oz. Pt coins have a $150-175 premium over spot on them. I don't see why a lower cost Pt coin should have a higher premium on it than a higher priced Au coin. One of the many oddities of the PM business, I suppose.

Nobles' are real coins also Gibraltar and Isle of Man have also issue bi metallic (gold & platinum) coins. Perth Mint does have Platinum Koala and Platypus coin issue.

Could be the much lower mintages of Pt coins versus Au and especially Ag counterparts
Proof Pt Eagles have a mintage of only a few 1000 every year, and BU ones a few tens of 1000.

Goldmart (www.goldmart.com) currently has 1 oz Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf coins at $99 over spot, 1 oz Australian Platinum Platypus coins at $74.99 over spot and 1 oz Isle of Man Platinum Noble at $54.99 over spot. Just make sure you don't order via credit card or any savings will be swallowed by the hefty fee they charge.

Here's my 2007 reverse proof. It's amazing that with melt on these down to $7xx they're still bringing well over $1,000 retail in PR70.
