I checked on Coppercoins and didn't find too much on the 1919 S and wonder if anybody can tell me what's going with this one? I can see the rim Cuds but the motto seems to have segments connecting it like a die break would at the top of most of the letters. Is this MD or other? Has anybody seen this before on this year and mintmark and if so any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've never seen one like that but I'd say that die pair is about three strokes away from being toast.

It is Die Deterioration. With very early Cud forming.

Thank you both for your responses Dave700x and amida17. I will check my other 1919 s coins and see if there any others that exhibit these traits. So I wonder how close this coin was to being one of the last with this die pair? Would such an error affect value much? I appreciate both of your help.

All evidence of a VLDS (Very Late Die State) on your coin. Heavy die flow lines and die deteriation visible on several areas.

Thanks for your response coop. Does it make the coin rare or just different? Thanks again.

Just like wrinkles on a senior, it happens to all dies in time if they are continued to be used. I would save it for the rim Cuds though. A nice educational piece to show new collectors.

Okay that's what I will do and label it as a VLDS. I laughed at your wrinkles on a senior comment, good way to look at it.
