This is my first Eisenhower dollar. I've got no experience on grading them. Were they in circulation?

Here's my question: Should there be some hair on the eagle's head? My coin does have some but seems to be worn through. Should there be a lot? Please post your MS Eisenhower dollar if you can. Othere than that, there are some scratches on the portrait.

there is a great thread on here about Eisenhower dollars. You can find it here:

Your typical uncirculated Ike will be an MS-60-62. Gem Ikes in early dates are very rare. The amount of hair you will see on an MS coin depends on the die state. The earlier in the life of the die the more detail you will see.

There are many great resources available if you want to get into Ikes. The best book ever written about them can be found here:

Thank you for the link. The problem is, I don't think that I saw anything certified that was certified and in MS condition.

coins really need to wobble to tell the grade, also I cannot see wear because the photos aren't razor sharp. Assuming its MS, I'd say its a early to mid die state obverse and mid to late die state reverse. The broken luster on the obverse and the slight hits that I can see on the coin in the fields would probably knock this coin down to MS-62/ MS-63 territory. Accounting for submission bias, the typical uncirculated grade for a 77-D is MS-64/65. A good starter coin, and clean enough that if you want to get into this wonderful series- you can use it as a barometer going forward. The tougher early dates and the 72 varieties would be great pulls in this condition.
