I recently bought this 1917 Australian half penny as part of a large world coin lot. I was wondering what it graded at. I would guess it must be either XF or AU, though I haven't had much experience in grading Australian coins.

Thanks,
XoG

again I'm a newb but I would go with vf to ef, because of wear on the band of the crown, closer to ef than vf for sure.
is the first 1 in 1917 wider than the second? the 7 doesn't look right to me either.

The 6 Pearls no centre diamond, is that a specific variety or just a means of judging the grade of the coin?
Thanks!,

The below photo shows the crown on the obverse. Whilst it is not the best photo it shows the 4 sets of 2 pearls and 3 individual diamonds in the band at the base of the crown. The second pair of pearls from the left are usually the first point to show wear, followed closely by the centre diamond slightly to the right of the above mentioned pearls.

As your coin doesn't have much of the centre diamond I wouldn't quite grade it VF, personally I see it more as aVF.
