Hello all. I have just cracked open my coin collection that had been in a box for over 30 years and have a load of coins I am wading through.

One is a Ioseph II coin in good condition. Under the coat of arms on the reverse it has the Number 2 and under his head on the other side has an M. I was wondering if anybody could shed some light on it's origans etc. ?

Many Thanks,

Mike
Rest in Peace

and

I have no clue, but perhaps someone out there has this coin in hand and can fill in the blanks in your description. Without a photo of both sides, diameter, and weight, it's rather difficult for us to do more than speculate.

Hello Mike and welcome to the forum!
Joseph II was the ruler of Austria, and the M most likely stands for Milan's mintmark. I didn't find anything fitting the description in Milan though. As pls mentioned the picture would be the best help in identification. Otherwise as much info as you could supply. The size, the weight (if you can determine that), composition (copper, silver, ...), all that would help with ID.

Think this is a better attempt at the reverse off the coin.

And the diameter is exactly 1 inch. Can't weigh it at the moment though, sorry .

This thing is driving me crazy!
The coin looks exactly as I had pictured it in my mind, but for a long time I couldn't find it even though I looked through the whole (I hope) empire and its possessions. Until I looked at higher denominations. Did you fail to mention that the coin was gold? I kinda doubt it.

So, here's the scoop. The design matches 2 ducat coin. But, first of all, it should be gold, second, a wrong mintmark, should be A, B, or E. Unless I'm missing any Austrian territory I believe you have an imitation 2 ducat.

Please someone correct me!

Didn't realise it may be gold, don't think it is myself but could be wrong. Many thanks for your help though.
