Proof coins have sharper strikes and mirror like finishes, if you found it in circulation you can still tell the difference by placing next to a same date non proof dime.

The chances of finding a no 'S' proof dime in circulation is nil, but one can hope...

is it possible for a proof to be worn and no longer look mirror like to where you cant tell? does the "proof" term mean that it wasnt circulated?

You've got dimes minted in Philadelphia. The P mintmark wasn't added to dimes until 1982. There were a few 1982 dimes minted in Philadelphia without a mintmark. These 82 No P dimes carry a large premium.

Proof isn't a condition, but a manufacturing (minting) process. The dies and planchets are highly polished and the coins are struck at least twice. The mirror finish can't just wear away without destroying most of the coin and by that point it isn't worth anything, but maybe face value at the most.

The P mintmark wasn't added until 1980, so dimes before then, from Philadelphia, won't have one.

Taking an image of a business struck cent and a proof cent show how much of a difference the coins are next to each other:
