My first gut reaction is "that is not real - paper does not do that". Looking at the pictures, the creases do not appear to match up. I think its something like your sandpapering idea.
edit: I meant that the creases to not appear to be front/back of the same note. More like 2 different notes.

Surely has to be two seperate notes. Cant think for the life of me how you could seperate them like that. I think your theory sounds about right.

if the paper is thick enough it can be done, not saying this note is real but if it could be in my opinion. and no its not me selling it. with a second look I reckon its real, but.......

Even if it was thick enough what would you use to seperate it?

This is a real puzzler and this could have been, and I'm only throwing this idea out there, how this note was separated. Paper becomes easier to tear when it is wet or damp so the trick would be to only get the centre of the note damp. This could be done by placing in water and soaking the whole note. Then removing and placing between two sheets of blotting paper which would draw the moisture from the top and bottom surfaces. When the top and bottom surfaces are dry and with the centre remaining damp the note is the very carefully pulled apart from diagonal corners (through the remaining damp center section of the note). The orange blotches show that the note has become wet and they don't marry up indicating they appeared after the note was separated, the adjacent corners have heavy creases due to the splitting pressure applied ? This is how I reckon it was split, if what the seller says is true and a coin dealer believes it's the one note.

I agree the note has obviously been super wet for some time, the creases & fold do look to match up to me. If someone wants to ask the seller to weigh the 2 halves together on coin scales the weight should be point 9 of a gram, I just weighed a note in a little bit better condition than that & in one piece LOL.

It's not my note , but I know how it may have happened as had similar experience many years ago... one single note was in old leather wallet which was in pocket when went swimming (voluntarily or involuntarily can't remember) wallet got soaked through... wallet was set out in sun to dry (with note inside) when dry wallet was opened an note paper split in half, each side stuck to the inside of the wallet... have a great day

no problems doing this , I did it many times with $ 2.00 notes,, when I retired from work ,i got brand new $ 2.00 notes , I bought a $ 25.00 laminater from the post office and did 20 x $ 2.00 notes in my laminater as well as 10 x $ 1.00 notes xx 5 x $5.00 notes and 2 x $ 20.00 notes for safe keeping . one day later about 4 years later I need some money for a car service so I had to use that money ..i cut the edge away from the plastic laminated sheet and split them all open , every one came out easy except the $ 2.00 notes as I seperated them ,,the note seperated perfect with the head side on 1 sheet and the tail on the other sheet , but I could not get the note off the plastic ..then to get value, I would travel on the bus or train and leave one on the seat then sit somewere else and watch the person when they found it ..some I through out the car window but did not see any reaction that way ..but I enjoyed it anyway .. keldaw ps I still have 17 $ 1.00 notes still laminated at home now .

That's hilarious. The joys of paper money. Maybe you could have sold it on ebay as a SPLIT LAMINATED FLAW NOTE...literally. Very funny.

An old trick was to take a $1 and a $20, split both, then glue them back into two $20 with $1 opposite sides. So the answer is yes, it can be done, but no, it's not a printing error.
