I'm off to my monthly coin club meeting, but wanted to start a thread...JUST saw this thread on here, relating to evasive colonials, and found this FAKES link, on FLICKER:http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/
12-31-11-recent ebay auction for a slabbed PCGS PR70 1977-S IKE---more later tonight, all I can say is if(and it IS) this is really happening, it spells bigtime gloom and doom for the industry...I've heard of this, of course, but, this is GETTING SCARY FOLKS...not sure about cert#, and will run it later...I hear the numbers run fine, and THAT's the scary thing, cause NO way to otherwise know a fake.

OK, so a bit confused here. Is the claim that the slabe is fake or the coin?

Did they pirate the image of the original slabbed coin and are in fact selling nothing? Not that I would ever intend to purchase a PR70 Ike.

So... what is an amateur like me to do ? Either learn before you spend or find a knowledgeable mentor.

That sounds like the situation, not that it's a fake slab, tho it could be a fake that will be shipped to the top buyer (and the three runner ups).

Did I read that PCGS will verify any of their slabs? And didn't they come up with artificial DNA to verify stuff they slobbed?

Just one more sign that PCGS needs to drop this label design and do everything Secure +, that is if they aren't infringing on the copyright of this individual who is suing them and NGC: http://www.scribd.com/doc/63695728/...ervice-et-al

(for the record, I'm not so sure that this lawsuit is legitimate, as the plaintiff seems to be a career patent maker of obvious things)

Well I'm glad that someone is finally going after them for doubling the Sheldon Scale. However I'm a bit saddened that it's someone who wants to use it themselves. :-P

I looked but could not find the claimed ebay listing either as a finished auction or one removed by ebay.

I would say both the coin and the slab are fake. Ike's facial expression does not appear right and the eye definitely looks wrong.

It's sometimes difficult to get the right URL. Here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/120836839203

That's what removed by ebay looks like.

the thing about these fake slabs is they caught on pretty quickly and now use legit certification numbers from past sales on Heritage, Teletrade and other auction houses. Once they have a fake coin and the fake slabs they go looking for legit certification numbers on these auction house sites and they copy the legit cert number and place that on the fake label so when you go to look up the certification number it looks like its legit, which the cert is real and a coin was graded at that same grade, but not the coin and slab you are looking at. You can go to Heritage and look at the original images and see if they match up but other than that you have to know how to spot these fake slabs before you purchase these coins

This is the original on Heritage http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...9&lotNo=1213
And this is the pictures from Heritage, with the one above beside it
