Hello! I bought this DMPL morgan a couple of years ago and once I got it in the mail I was at first disappointed at the extreme and severe weakly struck devices (Liberty's hair on the obv and complete baldness of the eagles breast on the reverse has NO details and is just smooth and rounded out and even some of the leg feathers)but the more I thought about the coin I though it was kind of cool due to the fact that almost all dmpl morgans were from the first several hundred strikes from a set of dies which generally gives them sharp details, I've never seen a dmpl like this before! I'd like to know what everyone thinks about this coin just for curiosity sake! Also, the weakness of the strike is much more prominent in person, the lack of detail is so much more pronounced with the coin in hand!

A DMPL with a very weak strike? Definitely New Orleans Mint. Very interesting.

Thanks superdave for the comment! I have really grown to love it too! I think I paid $100 for it a couple of years ago.

$100? Really? Oh, all day and yes, please.

One expects weak strikes from New Orleans. They're infamous for it, and I hope some day to finish the necessary research (if the facts are available) to understand just why they did things the way they did. But 1884 is hardly a year from which one would expect such an execrable strike; it makes me wonder if the root problem is that they were more willing to release die trials into circulation than the other mints.

it is hard to find New Orleans minted coins that are struck nicely, about like its a little hard to find one from San Fransisco that doesn't have a hammered strike. It is very rare to find a weak strike and also having DMPL fields. As SuperDave said, I love it just for the fact of the weak strike with the DMPL fields

Roger Burdette has already found the cause. Improper annealing of the planchets. New Orleans was rushing too many planchets through the annealing furnaces too quickly. Philadelphia sent people to NO to determine what the problem was and that was the conclusion they came to. They tested their conclusion by slowing planchets and lengthening the annealing time. Good strikes were the result of the tests. After they left though, under pressure to increase production NO started rushing the annealing again and the weak strikes returned. Roger does have the documentation.
