Hello

I really do enjoy looking at Civil War Tokens, and want to start collecting them.

But, I dont like getting ripped off. Is there a price guide on the internet (or on CCF)?

Thanks for any info and help, as always.

This site is the only place I can come to ask questions regarding coins, so I greatly appreciate any help I get.

There is not a current pricing guide that I am aware of. Do buy the books by George and Melvin Fuld. Both the Partiotic and Store Card books will help you learn about CWT manufacture and rarity. Your best option to learn pricing is to haunt auctions, in person and on-line, and see what tokens sell for. Pay very close attention to grade and rarity. These two items drive pricing.

Have fun, it a great part of numismatics.

Here is one of my favorites.....

For almost fifty years now, Civil War tokens have been among my favorite items to collect. I suggest that you visit the Civil War Token Society's website at: http://cwtsociety.com/ The $15 annual dues will enable you to receive the quarterly journal and discounts on books. There are token articles, auction listings, ads selling CWT's and more.

There's a price guide by Kanzinger that's available, but it's from 2002. It's a good guide to use for relative rarity and value, but it has to be used in conjunction with the Fulds' patriotic and storecard books; this, in order to ascertain the catalog numbers which Kanzinger references.

No one likes "getting ripped off" as you say. Paying too much for a coin or token at times is part of the learning process. The faster we learn, by investing in books and memberships, the less costly and more profitable the hobby becomes.

Through the CWTS, one can find most reputable dealers who offer price lists and auction catalogs that function as price guides. Check out this website: http://civilwartokens.com/ Steve Hayden is perhaps THE most highly regarded dealer in CWT's.

Exo is spot on. Get these books. If you wish to pursue CWTs and Patriotics, I cannot recommend more stronger getting these books.

The books that Exo is referencing can be found here, among other places:

Patriotic Civil War Tokens 5th Edition, by George & Melvin Fuld

U.S. Civil War Store Cards, by George & Melvin Fuld
