Hey all,
I dug this out of the ground last year and I am having a heck of a time getting much info on this one.
This is a trade token from a chain of stores called Federal Clothing Stores.
The little info I have found about this chain is they had stores in Birmingham, Montgomery, Dallas, Washington D.C and maybe a few others.

This token is huge, about the size of a half dollar, and has all that info on it and that 1922 date.

I also found out that in the book, Alabama trade tokens by Roy J Wood, this type was mentioned and rated R10...1-5 known to exist.
I have seen R10 tokens valued from under $10 to over $1000.

I posted a picture on a token site but that is the only picture I have found to be on the net anywhere, and that includes any others from the other cities that had these stores.

Evidently this was a year long promotion that they did for the whole chain, and I am impressed that they are giving away $10 in 1922, a large sum in those days.

Not knowing any more about this thing is driving me crazy so any help you can give will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Ooops...I meant giving away a dollar, not $10.

Nice that you have a photo of the store to go with the token.

I'm not quite sure what you want to know. It sounds like you've gotten the majority of what the token is about from Wood's book (cat #, rarity, etc.)

I can tell you that the token was most likely not struck using stock dies. A significant portion of merchants from that era could order their tokens out of catalogs, assembling an obverse and reverse from stock dies. A whole litany of token companies were in existence in the early 1920s, including Dayton Stencil, S.D.Childs & Company, Dorman, Greenduck, C.H. Hanson, Meyer & Wenthe, Wiley Osborne, Northwestern, Pannier, and Quint -- among many many others.

I was able to find several listings for Federal Clothing Store in Polk's Birmingham Directories for 1922-1924. You can find the link to the books here: http://sites.google.com/site/online...al/jefferson

See page 1282 in the 1922 directory.

I would just like to know any info that I have not found yet.

Not a lot out there on this ...also the value.
Not that I will ever sell it.

Thanks for your help and leads.

I see in the picture that the Federal Clothing store is adjacent to a Peoples Store that sold also sold clothing. That chain dates back into the late 1800's, I believe. While I've not seen the subject token before, I've found a few of the Peoples Store tokens, offering similar discounts on purchases, among coin dealer stock; these, priced in the $5-$15 range. Looking at old, city directories, I dated one such token from my hometown to the 1920's. Thus, these companies were apparently in competition, using a similar sales tactic, what with the $1 credit on a $10 purchase.
