I'm new to this hobby and I don't even know the words to describe this, so sorry it's long and rambling.

I just picked up a silver Maple Leaf at my local coin shop and I was turning it over in fingers and noticed that it's opposite from US coins.

The top of the Maple Leaf on the front is on the same side as the top of the back. Like if the coin was transparent and you held it up so the Queen's picture was upright, then the maple leaf on the back would be upright also.

US coins when you're holding it so the front is right side up, the back is upside down.

Is this right? What's it called when it's one way or the other?

If you hold a coin in front of you and turn it horizontally, and it is the same way up... it is called Medal Allignment.
With a U.S. coin it is called a Coin Allignment if I'm correct!

Hopefully it's clear :)

I don't think so, medal alignment is how UK coins are usually made. Coin alignment is how US coins are made and its different.

A page showing the difference:
