I went to a nearby coin show yesterday and horse (or should I say coin) traded for the following coin. My current 1851 Braided Hair appears UNC but has no mint glow. This one has quite a bit of mint luster AND it's a key date. Soliciting your thoughts on should it hit the 7070. Also grade thoughts given those annoying rim dings on the reverse. Paleoguy45

I guess it would depend on how you are building your set best quality or best rarity. The 1857 is (by your photos) almost as nice as the 1851 but with considerably less minted. In that if I were to choose I would go with the 1857.
Rest in Peace

For me it depends on the look of the album. For me, the early cents were too difficult to find with remaining luster, so I went with the ones with the highest level of detail. Your 1851 would fit that bill perfectly as it has stronger detail then the 1857. If you are trying to put together a large cent type set with the "cartwheel effect" (huge challenge), then go with the 1857. Or a better date type set, I would go with the 1857. They are both terrific coins!

I may be seeing this incorrectly, but the surface of the 1851 looks a bit rougher than the 1857.

Good point JBuck.... but it's the one staying in my 7070. The '57 turned into 15 Morgans today which will, in turn, become ebay fodder to support my coin habit ooops! I mean quest...

Good call PG ... that 1857 is a beautiful coin ... but weak in strike and detail IMHO.

Sooo ... perhaps some classic silver commemorative with those 15 Morgans?

Actually David my OCD is going for Hard Times and Civil War tokens at the moment. I just bought two display cases tonight, one to hold the "per century" coins I amassed late last year (600BC - 21st Century) and the other one for Hard Times tokens from the 1830's-'40's. The other display case I had gotten originally will be converted to holding Civil War tokens (50 count). I am definitely a moving target aren't I?
