Pardon my ignorance, but I have no idea what this means. Are they coins that are very worn? Counterfeit? Deeply toned? Something else?

I think some people use the term to refer to coins not of their own country. For example coins of the USA would be "darkside" coins for me.

It came from a qoute by someone whos name eludes me...to paraphrase..." US coin collectors know more about the darkside of the moon than they do about foreign coins." At least thats how I heard it?

Correct. I believe the phrase began over on the CU forum (or perhaps on a forum which no longer exists) about ten years ago, before this forum was founded. It's in the CCF Glossary. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
