Maybe I'm a "glass half empty" sort of person but my great fear is that if I tell the Bank that I am only going to look through the coins and then give them back for them to re count they might refuse to give me any or dream up some "coin noodling fee"

I wouldnt ever take them back where you get them or else you may end up doing some you have already noodled before.

At my normal bank they know I collect them, in fact last time I was there and cashed them in they asked if I wanted any more 50c coins, I said no I think I've found everything I'm looking for to which the teller replied 'so does that mean you want some 20's now'. If it's a branch I don't normally go to then I just say the coins are for a poker game.

My question is what should I have done in this situation. I put my coins into the coin counting machine and the machine got full so the teller came out and changed the change bag in the machine, inside the coin counting part of the machine I saw a bunch of UNC (full red) 1c and 2c coins sitting there (which the machine obviously couldn't sort). I was half tempted to ask if I could take them off the banks hand for their face value but wasn't sure if that would be against their policy.

No harm in asking. I think I am going to just tell the bank teller I collect coins do they have any old stuff. ...still thinking about the metal detector option also :-)

I am going to get a UV marker and start marking my coins. I am getting really concerned that I am in a closed market here. (Have just been pricing metal detectors!)
Wonder what the maths would be :

Number of people : 500,000 (in a large area)
Average amount of cash transactions both in and out of banks / businesses...
Average turnaround of a coin
Average distance covered.

All 4 big banks in my town know I am a collector. They also know that I share my larger finds with other collectors ( cant afford to keep them all myself). For this they call me if something good comes in.
