Hi, I'm new here. Seems there are a lot of knowledgable people that know coins. I have a few to show and wanted to have your opinions concerning their value. Here is a 1967 20$ gold coin and a 1976 100$ gold coin. Thanks for your opinions. Moved to Canadian NCLT forum - Sap

Welcome to the forum Zardoc... your 1976 coin normally sells between 350 and 450 while the 1967 usually sells north of $650and the most I have seen it sell for was $800

Hi darryldarryl and thanks for the info. One person offered me 750$ for the 20$ so it seems to be in the range that you suggest. I don't know of any place trustworthy were I can have them evaluated here in Montreal. Got any ideas?
I have few more coins to show.
Thanks a bunch.

Nice Coins. I still need to get my hands on the 67 PL set. One of my favorite coin reverse designs.

I agree, all those coins are fixed to spot price. The 67 IS an exception however if you can find one without the dark spots in high grade it brings a decent premium.
In fact, I'm looking to upgrade my own but I haven't seen one that's perfect (ish) in a while.

The 1967 $20 is a great design that has been on my want list for some time now.

I might put it on the selling block but I really need to find a place in Montreal that gives an honest quote like the Pawn stars :)

IIRC, the 1967 was a proof coin, part of the centennial set. They were illegal to import to the US. If that's PMD, it's really only worth scrap value.

It's technically a specimen strike, and yes the one in the picture is a bullion value grade.

Seems to me, the set with $20 gold coin was around $360 in 67. Gold was cheap, but $360 was still a lot of money in 67.

Actually the issue price was 40 bucks for the specimen set with gold and 12 for the proof like set with the medallion.

IIRC, the specimen 1967 set was the first true proof set Canada issued.

The mint had made specimens for some time - in fact, since they started the mint in 1908.
The first true PROOF strikes were made on the new presses they had to buy in order to make coins for the 76 Olympics.
First true proof coins in Canada were the Montreal Olympic series from 73-76 and then they started making the Double Dollar sets and silver dollars in Proof in 1981.
The 67 sets in cases were issued as specimen and PL finish (mint called them uncirculated finish- same as the ones in the envelope but with a nice medallion).

Quote: Seems to me, the set with $20 gold coin was around $360 in 67. Gold was cheap, but $360 was still a lot of money in 67 According to Charlton, 2011 edition p281, the issue price was $40. In today's dollar, this amounts to approx. $600, $800 or $1200 if invested in 1, 2 or 4 Yr CD. The calculations are based on published historical rates, and do not account for income taxes. As of today, metal content of this set is slightly above $900 - or slightly better than a 2 yr CD. If invested in the stock market?.... oh well.
