I have just sorted out hundreds of 2¢ coins (5 x 1968 in them) with a view to making a few sets. I want to do at least one set with, if possible, all mintmarks and varieties (did see a few missing "SD").
I put a 1967 (only Perth Mint) and a 1972 (only Canberra mint) reverse up on my desk as a reference for the claws when sorting other years. They looked not too hard to distinguish.

But, when I started sorting years from both mints all claws looked sharp to me but varying degree. And, didn't seem to have any blunt claws same as 1967. Are there slight variations in the mintmark claw for Perth Mint? Does anyone have good pictures (or a link) for the 2¢ mintmark difference.

1¢ mintmark pics would also be appreciated; starting similar exercise with them when 2¢ done.

Thanks,
Jeff

After searching for missing SD last night this morning I got up and started sorting them into years with the intention of making up a set. Must be the great minds think alike Once I'm done sorting years I will look at mint marks and if I work it out i'll put some pics up otherwise this information from someone would be very helpful.

I think this site has the information you need:

http://www.australian-threepence.co...t-marks.html

I think the Melbourne mint mark for the 2c that is illustrated on the site doesn't show the full extent of the blunting. However, once you compare coins it is much easier to recognise.

I was fairly sure australian-threepence would have it but my search there was not successful. Purple penny usually comes good for a link there but he probably knows the site inside out.

They are good photos. Obviously the problem is any coin with reasonable wear is harder to distinguish the small difference.

Thanks everyone,
Jeff

They should have kept the dot for Perth Mint, this would have saved hours on a loupe
On a worn 2 cent all the claws are blunt
