I have just got back from my local country store wiping the drool from my mouth.
Old mate the owner knows I collect coins so he asked me to have a bit of a sqizz ot some of the stuff he has saved from the till over the last few years.
He had 2 big calico bags of forign and aus coins , a heap of predecimal silver and a huge wad of decimal paper notes ranging from $1 to $100.
There was also an incused millennium 50 cent in there ( I pointed this out to him I'm going back tomorrow and am going to give him one of my old copies of rennics so that he can see what he has.
And NO he wouldn't sell them to me .
Even after I told him they are worth quite a bit of money.
Good on him he collects them cos he likes em and he has absolutely no idea of what he has
I will have to edumicate him about storage especially the notes that way they won't loose any of their value.
But by-crikey it was nice to see a raw mountain of great Aussie coins and notes.
Anyway I'll probably be able to catalogue them for him , That way it's a bit like a DE-facto collection of mine

How quickly would you have run to the bank if he said you could buy it

I recon if I offered him $3000 in crisp new 50's he would have taken it but that would have been wrong and immoral.
I'll just help him so that he knows what he has and the approximate value of it.
I hope he keeps it it would be a shame to see such a nice stash split up

Yes, educate on storage and care. I had a customer gave me a box of assorted coins recently because he knew I collected. Lots of early decimals and some pre-decimals and some foreign; many rather low wear.
But they had sat uncovered in a leaky garden shed. Mostly rather corroded and, to compound the error he attacked some halfpennies and pennies with vinegar and nickel alloy & silver with Ajax (or similar) to try and make them more presentable!
So his box of mostly quite collectible coins ended up as fit only for paperweights!

I am having a hard time typing this through the tears in my eyes jeff.
I feel this is the fate of a lot of our dearly sought after coins

Glad to see numismatic missionaries at work, tarrying in the fields. Remember, these folks will remember you if they have something they know you might need. The hobby should grow, and you are helping ! Good job!
