it has taken me a very long time to understand what you meant here. I have finally gotten it. I understand what you mean now. about calibrating the smile director. here is my first attempt. but I am getting it now. no editing just resized from raw. I also know now I need to recalibrate my smile director.

Those look good rocky! Did you put a mirror where the coin goes an snap a pic of the areas of illumination? If you do, check it out at both f22 as well as your shooting aperture (f5.6, f8, or whatever). With slabs, the light needs to stay outside the radius of the coin at shooting aperture. For raw coins, it isn't as critical.

yes ray I did. what surprise me was the tone of the light. the tone appeared one color of light. yet when I took the coin picture. the light color was different. you are right. you really have to take your time. to calibrate the light I really learned from this ray. thank you so much for sharing. I am going to spend some time on improving my smile director.

Looks good rocky!
Can you show the image of the mirror without the coin? And don't crop it square. This way we can see the reflection of the lights.

smile director with a new quarter axial lighting. know that I understand how this works. I am going to make a smile director with a full size lamp. I will set the mirror back up to get an image of the lamps.

here is a couple of photo take with a canon camera. 2 jansjo plus full lamp all with smile directors. I can see I will need a 3 jansjo lamp with a director. no editing just resizing. these are slabbed coins any thoughts appreciated

Are your images a final product of image stacking? Or are your images all single shots? Very nice images, impressive capture of toning and strike details.

The Regency Store thank you. the images are single photos. rmpsrmps created this thread. to demonstrate the results produced by a smile director. I built a full size lamp smile director. but it does not work as good as the jansjo lamps do. lighting is the big issue in coin photography. I hope this helps you. if you have any question feel free to ask. there is a wealth of knowledge and experience here on this forum. we are all trying to improve coin photography.
