I believe this is actually a commemorative medal, not a coin. I would guess that it is struck in bronze. I would think that it does not have very much value as it has been inlaid into the wood box.

it is very hard to tell if they used the real thing or a look alike (even though I am not familiar with that medal) because allot of times when they made small boxes like that they just made one side look like the coin/metal it was imitating and the other side would be flat with no design at all because it was never meant to be seen. We do have a few very knowledgeable medal collectors here and they may be able to tell you just by looking at that one side to if its an original or a copy made for the sole purpose of inserting it into that little box

The design shown is that of a silver 1 balboa coin from Panama. I don't have my books with me right now, so I can't give a price range. It should be silver, .900 fine, the same weight as an American silver dollar, so (assuming its a genuine coin) it's worth silver content even if it's not desirable for a coin collector, owing to being mounted in a box like that.

The "gold tone" might be the result of a coat of varnish.

I can't quite tell from the pictures but are you sure it is a coin mounted on the box or is it a medal mounted on the box. Nevertheless, if you are looking to sell it, numismatic value of that "coin" is pretty much gone although there are some mad collectors who are willing to pay good prices for coins on such box, so don't even attempt to remove it in any ways.

Now I'm home, I can compare it with the pics in the Krause catalogue, and my own example of the coin. I'd have to say I'm now suspicious. Here's my example of the 1 balboa. This 1973 proof coin shows the design in question, used from 1931 to 1974:

Note particularly the rim - the coin on the box has a fancy double border with beading; real ones have just a simple rim. There's also a lack of 3D detail on the wreath-leaves and the portrait. Count the number of "loops" on the frilled collar!

Sorry - looks like this one's just a "lookalike" medal, after all.
