I just took a survey for the mint and it appears they are looking at releasing two limited edition sets of Eagles per year. They seem to want to have unique coins in the sets and with edition sizes of 100,000. Their thought is to limit them to two per household. What do you all think about what they should put in the sets? how many per run? How many coins per set? Two sets a year too many?

I just took the survey. Clearly, they wanted feedback on what they should be doing with our silver eagles. I think the 25th Anniversary sellout suprised even the mint, and they are looking for ways to continually re-capture that success. ASE's are very popular, almost anything they would do in the way of sets would be a slam dunk. I hope they make the sets.

One very interesting question in the survey is about possible alternative coins to include in such a set. One thing it mentions is special mintmarks, and it includes "D" in the list of possibilities. That would be interesting. The one they listed that got my attention was the possibility of a "ultra-high relief" silver eagle.

How do you access this survey or did they contact you?

Quote: Once ever 5 years is MORE than enough....imo I agree. Twice-yearly limited edition sets will have us jaded within two years.

They gave a box for general suggestions. I told them they should alternate designs like they do in the UK with the Britannia, i.e. Walking Liberty on even numbered years and a new depiction of Liberty on even numbered years.
I also chided their quality control.

I guess a customer who has ordered every proof and set issue since 1996 doesn't warrant a comment.

More details! The U.S. Mint may consider offering a special American Eagle Silver Coin Set in 2012. This would be a special set containing the following 1-ounce silver coins: *American Eagle Silver "San Francisco Proof" Coin bearing a "S" mint mark, only available in this special set *American Eagle Silver "San Francisco Reverse Proof" Coin bearing a "S" mint mark, only available in this special set This set will only be produced in 2012; no additional American Eagle set of this type are planned in the near future. The U.S. Mint plans to manufacture 200,000 of these sets. Once these are sold, no additional sets will be available. There will be a purchase limit of 2 sets per household. The price of this set will be approximately $125. How appealing would each of the following types of coins be if they were included in the set? Standard American Eagle Silver uncirculated coin (with customary "W" mintmark) Uncirculated American Eagle Silver coin with special Mint Mark (e.g. "S", "D", etc.) Coin with a unique finish -- reverse proof Proof American Eagle Silver coins with special Mint Mark (e.g. "S", "D", etc.) American Eagle Silver bullion Standard American Eagle Silver proof coin (with customary "W" mintmark) Coin with a unique design feature -- ultra high relief I remarked that I would love to see one minted with the same reverse as a Walking Liberty half dollar. The current design reminds me too much of the Kennedy reverse which is not a favorite.

Don't feel slighted if you don't get asked to take a survey, it has nothing to do with how much you have bought or how long you have bought stuff. Surveys by design are given to a random population. The only qualifier is if you have ever bought something from the mint.

They release such a set with such limited mintages, somebody is sure to be shut out again. I received the invite to the survey, was gonna post the invite, and find out what's it all about. Now that I know, I know how to answer, I'm going to vote no on these superfluous vanity sets. As nice as the two special S-mint coins are, it's way too much to buy from the mint in 2012.

Why oh why does everyone feel that "limited edition" should equal "everyone gets one". The two are mutually exclusive terms. That is the whole point of "limited", not everyone will get some which makes them collectible and desirable.

Too many sets at one time will make me stop collecting the current stuff. If I wanted to collect 200 issues a year I'd be collecting things from the Royal Canadian Mint.
