When looking at coins on the net, in this case a 1887-S Morgan, I keep seeing the words "Tough Date" in the description. Just what do they mean by that? Tough to find, tough in certain grades. Is it like "key date"? Or is it just another selling tool?

Just another selling tool that I have seen. I have seen ebay posters highlight "tough" or "key date" to some coins that have the highest mintage's of the series.

"Tough Date" is one of those highly overused phrases, kind of like "Monster Toned". 1887-S is a better date but there is nothing tough about it until you reach the MS64+ level.

"Tough date"? Hmmmmm...I would interpret that to mean they had a really hard winter or a failed crop in 1887 at the place where the seller comes from. No doubt living was tough then

Or could mean it is a coin that will punch you in the nose.
Used almost as much as UNSEARCHED. I've seen tuff date, rare date, very nice date, scarce and on and on and on with anthing that could make someone jump to get it.
