I have a unopened envelope of a 1961 proof set, given to me at christmas. Is this something I should open, or is it have more value not knowing the condition of the coins inside? Same question on a 1964 I recently bought on ebay and should receive soon?

Welcome cpfull !!! It depends. Are you a collector, or an investor? Investors or speculators will tell you to keep 'em sealed for possible future resale value. I'm a collector, so I'd open them. I would definitely open the '64 proof set when it arrives. It might have an "accented hair" Kennedy half dollar inside, and, as I understand it, they are a bit more valuable than the regular variety. Also, if any of the coins are "cameo" or "deep cameo" looking (where the portrait, letters and such are really frosty looking, but the fields look like really dark smooth mirrors), they will be worth more as well. Wait for some more replies, though. You may decide on a different course altogether. Whatever you do, enjoy !!!

I pretty much agree with Auldfartte. I like to collect coins. So I guess, do you want to admire the coins or an envelope?
How much diffence is there in value between un-opened and opened sets? That may be your deciding factor.

I have to say that the "unopened" proof sets are one of the biggest scams on ebay. These sets can be opened with steam and resealed and nobody would ever know. As a result, I don't feel that keeping it sealed is going to make it worth more and you won't be able to enjoy the coins in a sealed envelope. To be honest with you, every set that I sell now gets opened prior to sale so that I can evaluate the coins and be able to describe them better. It is more important to keep the packaging intact with the set and keep it as nice as possible. These sets are hard to find with the envelopes not written on or torn.

We have also had many consignment clients tell us that they bought mints sets like this straight from the mint and they were not sealed, and never were. So you check the coins, lick the glue, and seal it.

Thanks, I will probably open it tonight after work then. If I get something really nice I will try to figure out how to photograph it and post the pics.

From what I've seen, unopened sets don't bring very much more $s than opened sets. I say open and enjoy.

Hmm, last time I checked, we collect coins, not evelopes with (hopefully) nice coins inside them. But then, I never understood the toy collectors who don't take their toys out of the box and give em to a child.
