I have been wanting a book on Roman coins for a while, and this just arrived on my doorstep--Sears' Roman Coins and their Values, 4th Ed. Amazon had a "used" (almost new) copy for $25. It looks like interesting reading, and should help me understand the larger context of emperors and coin types. It looks very detailed--any recommendations on how to use this book, or where to start? Nice book!

Red cover 1988? These last of the one volume Sears usually go for twice that. They have been replaced by the multivolume 'Millennium Edition' but there is demand for the old concise version. Good buy!

This was my first book back in 1990 - I still use it today regularly, its much easier to read than RIC. As Doug says you got it for a good price.

I have the same book as well and got it for about that same price.
Now I have Sear's book on ancient Greek of Asia and Africa, it was a little more pricey.
I want to get his book on Greek of Europe too but haven't found a deal yet. They're mostly around 80.00.
The the information at the beginning of his books is really good.
Enjoy.

Keep in mind values can only be used as a rough guide and are giving in British pounds.

Congratulations!
I also purchased a book a few weeks ago that helps me out quite a bit. AORTA, which is a lite and affordable version of Eric II, apparently.I have been reading a lot from the older books as well.

Those of you who have become addicted to identifying coins to a catalog number based on minute details will be disappointed in Sear. The book does not list all the known coins but selects a sampling of things you might find interesting. It has an introduction that will help you understand the coins but ignores mintmarks and minor variations for the most part. It is not the only book for a library but not a bad choice for a first.
