Hey guys,
well I know we all have them. a stack if not more nickel 50 cent coins that are not worth putting into books and are kind of a pain to take back to the bank.
Well today I found a couple of ways to get rid of them:
1. This one I knew for some time but have yet to try, Parking meters. Yes you know those darn things downtown that charge you an arm and leg for parking. Well they take 50 cent coins... In a way... those meters see them as loonies and give you a dollars worth of time. Kind of a grey area when it comes to legality but hey they over charge anyway and I'm sure when a parking guy finds them heck probably want them. ;P
2: Now this one I found out by accident today... I went to a local bank that has a coin machine and dumped in my excess dimes nickels quarters loonies toonies and little did I know about 5 50 cent coins and 10 nickel dollars as well. O.o darn it forgot I had those in there. The dollars got stuck and seriously chewed up(i did get them back when they opened the machine for me.) Anyway the machine took the 50 cent coins as dollars(not a bad profit). I'm soo going to jail, well maybe not I'm sure they will over look a $5 dollar mistake. I hope. I did mention it to the teller but he just shrugged it off and said dont worry about it. this may not be the best way to get rid of them.. NOT RECOMMENDED unless you want to go to jail. hehe
3: I want to hear your ideas how to get rid of them other then dropping them off at the bank. And I'm not talking about giving them away either you have to try and get there face value at least from it.. GO... Edited by skwca 01/25/2012 02:06 am

Funny this topic came up! I had the same problem once, so I thought I'd simply spend 'em since they were legal tender. My first experience was at a local Tim Horton's attempting to buy a large, double/double. I handed the cashier 4 nickel half dollars and waited to see her expression. She looked at them and said, "Oh, I'm sorry Sir, but we don't accept foreign money here." I said, "take a real close look at the Country of origin marked on the coins." She then yelled for a supervisor to come to the front cash. Another employee finally arrived and started to examine the coins, she said," I've never seen these before, what are they?" At this point the morning rush was backed up close to 15 people deep and I could see the hate and anger in people's eyes for keeping them from their morning fix! I hastily asked for my 4 halves back and in turn gave the cashier a toonie. Grabbed my coffee and ran for my life! p.s.: good luck spending 'em! Glenn

LOL@Glenzy .... yeah that pretty much makes sense.
I admit I just roll them up and take them to the bank after the little kids sometimes take some to fill in their books.
I've been buying uncirculated rolls for the past year, just to have a few around as time goes on. I'm up to 1989 now and have some of 2000's.

I have been very lazy and my pile of halves are growing high. Neat way to distribute some of them I guess!

I have donated to "drop boxes", ie @ Tim's for their camp, etc.
Spending is a bit trickier...I have spent them at the Legion without issue. The people working there definately recognize them.

I keep them for tips. It's not exactly giving them away, since I'd tip otherwise. If they don't want it, it's still worth 50¢ and 1$. Also, I heard the RBC had to take them, as they'll take any legal canadian tender, some sort of agreement with the mint. I haven't checked that yet though, might not be the case.
