Another coin from my Ancient Greek collection.

This obverse type has been variously interpreted as representing the Dioscuri, the rising and setting sun, and the two branches of the river Danube. - Greek Coins and Their Values by David Sear.

This is an often faked coin type but here is a nice, genuine example.

Istros, Silver stater
Obv:- Facing male heads, left inverted
Rev:- ΙΣΤΡΙH, sea-eagle grasping a dolphin with talons, A below dolphin
Minted in Istros, 400 - 350 B.C.
Reference:-- AMNG I 416, SNG Cop 192 var (right head inverted), SGCV I 1669

Sunrise....-Sunset....

Regards,
Martin

Yeah, wow--beautiful coin! This isn't helping me curtail my purchasing of Greeks.

I don't collect Greeks, only Romans at the minute but must admit that aesthetically the Greek coins are far, far superior. I guess it helps that you have very nice examples too maridvnvm!

These coins come with either head inverted and with the reverse eagle facing either way not to mention at least three denominations and several symbols under the dolphin. The come plated and solid silver barbarous. Yes there are fakes but there are enough variations in the real ones that you really can't expect exact matches. The one shown here is a very nice example of a common variety.

I have a few nice ancient Greek coins but I can't afford to own any in this level of condition.

I will just appreciate these instead. Thanks for showing this one.
