I've posted this already on a fake coin board, but perhaps you would like to comment too. From ebay, described as an "authentic Parion in Mysia AR 13-14mm. silver Hemidrachm 2.37gm." To me, it looks very dubious--what do you think? Fake, and why?

Does not have the classic look that you expect to see on this type of coin, the details are crude and the coin appears to have a silver looking wash. Overall a poor looking fake.

I don't like the look of it at all. It looks modern and the fabric looks wrong too.
It doesn't match any fakes that I have already seen but new ones are being produced on a regular basis.

I wouldn't normally even post a coin like this, save for the flowery description and their "lifetime guaranteed authenticity" might fool somebody. But, would a seller who is vaguely knowledgeable in ancients be fooled here? This piece doesn't look remotely struck, or have the correct style/workmanship. Thanks maridvnvm--should I submit a fake report on this one?

There are a lot of little things that would put me off this coin. It looks coated but that's hard to be certain of in a picture, the surface is not what I would expect from crystallisation and as already pointed out it does not look struck. Even the colour of it looks 'off'.
I don't know much about Greek coins and I'm not a style expert so this coin would fool me in that department, to my eye it looks OK.
Its sad that a 10000+ feedback seller of coins would pass this on, he surely knows its no good? I also think its sad that somebody parted with $85 of their 'hard earned' for it, they too should know better or try harder to keep their hands in their pockets.

I was just looking through the seller's listings. There are reproductions there as well.

It's always good to compare coins that are in question. I'm not an expert but by comparison I think these four are authentic. Photos from Vcoins. I think here you can see what is meant by fabric. Also look at the eyes of these Gorgons, all have a 'look' in the eyes that fakes just don't seem to be able to duplicate.

Very nice, the last one is scary with the teeth, the mouth looks like a bat with spread wings.

Thanks Doucet for posting comparison pics! They really show how weak the Gorgon in the ebay coin is, even compared to worn examples.

Here is the one I have in my collection. Definitely a different texture and design. -Kurt

That's a nice one Kurt! There is something unmistakable about a struck coin.

Quote: I was just looking through the seller's listings. There are reproductions there as well. Do people like to buy crap from sellers like this? I think I must be doing it wrong, this seller is doing all of the things I detest when choosing who to buy from! Practically everything is described as 'rare' when its all not, at all, by anyone's standards. He is selling copies alongside the real thing and a lot of the ancients have been harshly cleaned and repatinated! Don't even get me started about dropping the word 'Christian' into anything remotely near Constantine (who incidentally was far from 'Christian' for the vast majority of his life) in date! All of his descriptions are cut-and-paste from Wiki, and: Quote: Please include 5 dollars and a short request with your payment if you would like a COA What! He's not a museum or an expert, its worthless! I can understand sending an 'information sheet' or a receipt out for the buyer to refer to or if its a gift but to charge $5 is shocking! He grades the coins - yeah, useful, its not the 1960s anymore, we have full colour digital pictures now but doesn't even attempt to add a reference number to the coins. The worst thing is he is on almost 11k feedback! AGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! ...and relax, deep breaths, think about a mountain stream, my favourite item title has to be this though: Quote: Julius Caesar original silver reproduction Denarius(RARE) 'original reproduction (RARE)' is that opposed to the common reproduction of a reproduction? I doubt he knows what an 'oxymoron' is, I cant help him with the 'oxy' but if he looks in the mirror he'll be half way there. EDIT - just read this back, I may have over-reacted slightly

Quote:'original reproduction (RARE)' is that opposed to the common reproduction of a reproduction? Exactly--I think all the bluster about "authenticity" when it's simply a con--even the real coins are misrepresented. I had to stop looking so I wouldn't grind down my teeth.

Take a deep breath, relax and then think about good coins, and from other sellers. I haven't and won't ever buy from that seller. I've seen that seller's listings before.
